Parental Leave Proposals

The Government has published the Children and Families Bill 2013, containing proposals on shared parental leave, flexible working and adoption leave.  The right to request flexible working will be extended to all employees from 2014 and from 2015 parents will be able to share up to 52 weks’ leave.

At the same time the 26 week qualifying period for adoption leave will be removed and the structure of statutory adoption pay will be brought in line with statutory maternity pay entitling adoptive parents to 6 weeks at 90% of salary.

The Government has also put forward proposals to allow employees time off work to meet with children whom they plan to adopt.  it is not yet clear whether this will be paid or unpaid time off work. The Government is also considering the introduction of ‘adoption activity days’ to allow adopters to play a more active role in the adoption process.
